Clement Attlee

Leader of the Labour Party, 1935-1955

Attlee lived with his family at 'Heywood', a large villa on London Road, during the 1930s and the Second World War.  For a short description of Attlee's life, and photographs of the family's time at Stanmore, follow the link to the Stanmore Tourist Board.

The following image shows a portion of the 1939 Register of Electors for Stanmore North ward. 'Heywood' was situated on London Road in Stanmore, close to the Underground Station.

'Heywood' was eventually demolished and replaced by an apartment block, 'Heywood Court'. The next image shows a plaque noting the former location of Attlee's home. [Image reproduced with permission of Stanmore Tourist Board.]
